The Views Around Amsterdam

Friday 29 November 2019

Throwback to October 2018 and a long weekend in Amsterdam. Having never visited the Netherlands before Amsterdam was high on my bucket list of city breaks with its picturesque buildings and canals. It's an ideal city to visit where you can get around all of the sights available by foot which is the best way to take in the views.

On our first day in this city we joined onto a free walking tour which gave us an overview of the history of the city and walked us around all the major sights which gave us a fantastic grip on our bearings of the area.

Every canal had a different shot or view point giving a different angle of the city with different buildings proving numerous photographic backdrops. After the walking tour which ended near the Anne Frank house we walked back into the main centre and took pictures of the parliament building.
Our hotel was the Holiday Inn Express which was located centrally and was a fantastic base to head to any and all tourist sights. After visiting the Parliament building we had a wander to the flower market which because of the time of year was not fully in bloom, however there were many tulip buds in a can available to purchase that you could take home and grow.
Following this our time was spent wondering around visiting the obvious sights such as the Anne Frank House, Vondelpark, Dam Square and the Rijksmuseum. I found the sights and the city to be so easy to get around everything is within walking distance and there is public transport available if you'd prefer not to have to walk everywhere. Despite the obvious tourist attractions the city with its vast canal systems and picturesque buildings was a delight to wander round and explore, with a majority of the buildings looking as if they had just come off of a chocolate box.
While there we also opted for a canal boat tour to get a view of the city from a different perspective and to learn more about the history and the culture surrounding the buildings. This was well worth it and most definitely a must if you are planning to visit Amsterdam. We opted for an open top cruise to really give us the best views of the water and the scenery.
Overall I do believe Amsterdam was one of the prettiest cities I have had the pleasure of visiting. The atmosphere was so relaxed and friendly and the whole trip went incredibly smoothly. This is definitely a city I would recommend visiting and one that I would head back to.
